Sööma strongly believes in a multidisciplinary approach to treat various conditions and provide quality care. Nutrition counseling is essential in the treatment of eating disorders because it helps individuals restore a “normalized” relationship with food, addressing both the physical and psychological barriers to making changes to eating habits and patterns.  Nutrition counseling provides personalized guidance and exploration regarding nutrition and variety to support recovery, whatever that means to each individual.

Below, we outline how nutrition counseling can be beneficial in the treatment of eating disorders, but please note that our dietitians treat various conditions and presentations that range from disordered eating to eating disorders.

Nutrition Counseling and Eating Disorders

Nutrition counseling is an important component in the treatment of eating disorders, which include conditions such as Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge-Eating Disorder and Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder.

Here are some key benefits of nutrition couseling in this context:

Individualized Guidance:

  • Eating disorders affect each person differently. Dietitians who specialize in eating disorder treatment create a tailored treatment plan based on your unique needs, lifestyle, and goals. Whether you’re dealing with anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating disorder, our dietitians help you rebuild the relationship with food that you want, by offering tools to restore your nutrition and slowly transition towards normal eating, whatever that may mean for you.

***Please note that if you struggle with an eating disorder, it is absolutely NOT recommended that an intuitive eating approach be offered at the onset of treatment. Intuitive eating requires one to be able to connect with their body and inner wisdom, which is often difficult when one is struggling with an eating disorder.

Restoring Physical Health:

  • Nutritional imbalances caused by disordered eating can lead to serious health issues. The dietitians at Sööma focus on restoring your body’s health by providing guidance on adequate nutrition, reintroducing food groups safely, and helping you meet your body’s specific needs, from a physical, emotional and cognitive standpoint. This process is essential to regain energy, improve digestion, and stabilize hormones.

Breaking the Cycle of Restriction or Overeating:

  • We understand that eating disorders often involve harmful cycles of restriction, bingeing, or purging. Nutrition counseling provides nutrition education, practical tools and strategies to break these patterns, empowering individuals to nourish their bodies appropriate and understand physical and emotional vulnerabilities that may lead to these patterns.

Supporting Emotional Well-being:

  • The dietitians at Sööma are trained to go beyond food, nutrition education and energy intake; we help you explore the emotional and cognitive triggers behind your eating disorder. Working closely with therapists on our team, we address the psychological factors that may be driving your behaviors and support you in developing more effective coping mechanisms, aligned with the way you want to live your life.

Long-Term Recovery and Relapse Prevention:

  • The goal of our nutrition counseling isn’t just to help you heal physically but to empower you with skills for long-term recovery. We guide you in making sustainable changes, building a relationship with food and your body that you want, and avoiding relapse. With consistent support, we help you transition from structured plans to intuitive eating, so you can live a life free from the control of an eating disorder and don’t feel like external rules or “being in recovery” is the only option for you to not engage with the eating disorder.

A Safe, Non-judgmental Space:

  • At our practice, we offer a compassionate, safe environment where you can express your concerns and challenges without judgment. We believe in working collaboratively, at your pace, always respecting your autonomy as you move through your recovery journey. As dietitians who are trauma-informed, we understand how your experiences impact your capacity to move towards change and we welcome you, whether you feel ready to make specific behavior changes or not.

Our nutrition counseling approach is informed by various therapeutic modalities:

  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Teaches skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.
  • Family-Based Treatment (FBT): Involves family members in the treatment process, particularly effective for adolescents.
  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT): Addresses issues in personal relationships that may contribute to the eating disorder.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Encourages acceptance of difficult emotions and commitment to personal values and behavior change.

Registered Dietitians are NOT therapists. Dietitians do not offer therapy. However, dietitians who specialize in the treatment of eating disorders have received specialty training in various therapeutic approaches to better serve and support their clients.
